Community Payback Scheme Pays Dividends

Low level offenders have carried out unpaid clean up work in Collier Row as part of the borough's ongoing 'Community Payback' scheme. Working under supervision of the London Probation Service and Havering Police, the clean up team arrived at Orchard Avenue to remove litter, rubbish and graffiti, to the approving glances of local passer-bys.

The Havering Community Safety Partnership-funded scheme has been operating for over three years and enlists only low level offenders who have received court sentences of anywhere between 40 and 300 hours community service.

Requests from residents are forwarded to the Havering Community Safety Partnership by park grounds maintenance staff and Safer Neighbourhood teams, who then prioritise and allocate the work to the clean up team.

Mawneys Action Team Member, Graham Price said "It is good news that the local community are benefiting from these ‘clean ups’ and it is good news that offenders have to do the work, it may give them the chance to reflect on their crimes on the local community".
